Description - Features

Oregano has 1–3 cm long, egg-shaped leaves, arranged oppositely, and small white-pink flowers that appear at the top of the shoots.

Its branches are thin and form flower heads at the ends. It is a woody phrygian with a fluffy stem, which reaches a height of 30 to 80 cm. Its seeds are very small and brown in color.

Oregano is perhaps the most famous Greek herb, inextricably linked to Mediterranean cuisine and diet. It is widely used as a seasoning, giving a characteristic flavor and aroma to foods, while at the same time it is utilized both in the human body and in livestock farming.

It has a multitude of beneficial properties with many applications in health. Its phytochemical compounds provide powerful antibiotic properties, without the side effects of chemical antibiotics and without disrupting the intestinal microbiome. On the contrary, it has a strong antibacterial and antiparasitic effect.

Research conducted on the yeast Candida has shown that oregano can inhibit its overgrowth and help restore the balance of the digestive system. It also has antibacterial effects, useful in cases of bacteria such as E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, even in drug-resistant strains.

It is worth mentioning that the most common microbe that causes urinary tract infections in both sexes is E. coli (coli bacteria), at a rate of approximately 80%.

Oregano essential oil (olive oil) is also extremely useful for external use, especially in skin inflammations. It can be applied topically in cases of infections, such as staphylococcus, as well as in general skin problems. It is necessary to dilute it in a base oil, such as almond oil or olive oil. For example, 15 drops of oregano oil can be added per 10 ml of base oil.

Oregano also has a beneficial effect on diseases of the gastrointestinal system, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, gastritis and ulcers. At the same time, it contributes to improving blood quality, reducing cholesterol and helping to prevent atherosclerosis.

Its use is also particularly beneficial for the immune system. It has a strong antiviral effect, suitable for treating the common cold and flu. It helps with upper respiratory tract infections, such as sore throats, swollen glands and pharyngitis. Especially in the early stages of an infection, it can prevent the progression of inflammation, reducing or even avoiding the use of medications.

For this property, the synergy of oregano with propolis and thyme is indicated, by spraying the tincture on the throat or gargling.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most famous aromatic plants, whose name is directly linked to summer and the traditional Greek table.
